Homeschooling moms, how do you set up your classroom areas?
My daughters are 3 and 5 and as they are about to go into the elementary grades homeschooling is going to get more complicated. Currently, their classrooom area where preschool and kindergarten takes place is two rooms in our house that connect to each other. The first room is set up like a classroom but smaller. I have a desk with a computer which is also somewhat of an office area for me. I have children’s books, and two desks for the girls with compartments that slide out where they can keep their folders and markers. There is a tv for wathing educational dvds. I have workbooks for them and a desk with a computer in the room too and school supplies in bins.
The next room doubles as a playroom for the girls but is also where art, music and recess takes place. There’s toys, easels, craft supplies a few cheap little knicknack instruments.
When we first started homeschooling, adn still had the belief that education had to resemble school, we had a “classroom environment”. First, it was a separate building altogether and then it was a room inside our house, each which was equipped with a clock, schedule, desks, the like.
We finally realized that such a setup inhibited us more than it helped us. Now, our “school” room is the formal dining room, which is more like a library. As oru kitchen has both a built in peninsula bar and a booth, the table in the formal dining room is used for projects and the like. There are three sets of shelves in the formal dining room, which hold various curricula, books, puzzles, games, bins filled with arts adn crafts supplies, etc. There is also a bulletin board where we post pamphlets, brochures, etc. and a white board which they often use for games and/or lessons. There is a desk, but again- most used for storage.
We do lessons in that room occasionally, but also in the kitchen, living room, my husband’s shop, outside in the garden, and more and more often programs in the community where they often take the current book they are reading to keep them occupied on the ride there/back. We have evolved to see education as a part of life, not soemthing that is limited to a specific building/room or a certain time. I think that outlook alone has enhanced their education.
We watch educational DVDs or programming in the den/family room, we play board games on the living room floor. We have done science projects on the kitchen counter or in the bathroom. Many lessons are done in the shop where there is more space for it and all the tools we could possibly need. My oldest does her independent work in her bedroom, comfortable on her bed. My son focuses better at the peninsula counter, where I can see him from almost everywhere and gentlly remind him to keep on track. However, he has been known to climb a tree and read a book perched on a limb, etc. So long as learning is occuring, all is well.
So, for us the “classroom” is more of a staging area.
